Seulgi Lee’s solo exhibition GORU GORU brings together, for the first time in a French institution, a vast body of work created by the artist over the last twenty-five years.

The title of the exhibition, GORU GORU, which means « a bit of everything » in Korean, refers to the notion of a diverse and balanced whole; an exhibition conceived as a meal in which one would eat a little of everything—flavours, textures, raw, cooked, fermented, sweet, savoury, animal, plant, cold, hot—and where each element is treated equally. The title’s sound also evokes the G, the R, and the O of the Garonne and the swirling presence of its waters at the foot of the Frac. GORU GORU thus offers an immersion into Seulgi Lee’s practice, where early works stand alongside more recent pieces—some made specifically for the exhibition; a veritable bath of colour where simple, sometimes performative gestures and forms make objects « dance » or « speak ».

For while Seulgi Lee explores the language of the objects, artefacts, tools, and phenomena around us, she conceives of them rather as subjects—genuine subjectivities endowed with agency[1] and the power to act. What do objects tell us? What do they make us do? How do colours influence us?

In the humanities and social sciences, object agency refers to the capacity of non-human entities—artefacts, tools, technologies, infrastructure, or natural elements—to act upon the world, to influence human behaviour, and to tale part in the constitution of social relations. This concept breaks with a strictly anthropocentric view, in which humans are the only agents endowed with intentionality and the capacity for action, proposing instead a symmetrical ontology in which objects have a form of « power to act ».

She has thus gradually become closer to craftspeople, with whom she has sometimes embarked on long-term collaborations that highlight techniques and skills, some of which are destined to disappear. In these collaborations, the craftsperson’s gesture, embodying memory as much as technique, becomes a true language: it conveys, connects, and records a history that words alone cannot tell.

The GORU GORU exhibition was conceived by Seulgi Lee and Elfi Turpin to complement YOMO JOMO, a solo exhibition by the artist, running from 26 November 2026 to 28 February 2027 at the Seoul Museum of Art (SeMA) in South Korea.

The GORU GORU exhibition will be accompanied by a monograph to be published in 2027 by JRP | Éditions.
